I am not a lawyer who steers people to a plea bargain. I am not in league with prosecutors, law enforcement or judges to “process” defendants. There is a time and place for negotiations, but my first instinct and my deliberate approach is to mount a vigorous defense. I work for you, and my mindset is to try to position you for a dismissal of charges or an acquittal at trial.

Jocuns Law Firm is a grassroots firm with a holistic philosophy. Every person has different needs, and every criminal case or personal injury case is unique. I am completely comfortable in a courtroom. It’s where I shine. I have a solid track record in a wide range of criminal cases, from misdemeanors to the most serious felonies such as homicide, robbery, rape and drug trafficking.

In the recent past, I was known throughout Michigan as an authority on marijuana defense – my mantra was “Don’t let your rights go up in smoke!” In part because of my active lobbying for legalization and successful courtroom advocacy, marijuana is now largely decriminalized in Michigan. I am very proud of that achievement, but the government’s war on drugs has simply shifted to other controlled substances.

My appellate practice is also an important part of what I do with the support of my staff at Jocuns Law Firm. I regularly handle criminal appeals, both in my own defense cases and in taking up the torch where other lawyers fear to tread or lack the right experience. My advocacy has resulted in reported decisions before the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Court of Appeals.

I am an alum of the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in Idaho, which helped hone my courtroom skills. In turn, I have taught trial advocacy to other lawyers throughout Michigan. I am also active in professional organizations and public advocacy groups such as NORML.
